LG Refrigerator Not Cooling: What to Check First
LG refrigerators cool the fresh food compartment with air moved from the freezer side, so the state of the freezer is the most informative thing you can check.
Quick answer
Check the freezer first. If the freezer is cold and the fresh food section is warm, the problem is airflow: blocked vents, a stopped evaporator fan or a frosted evaporator coil. If both sections are warm, look at the condenser coils, the door seals and whether the compressor is running at all. Confirm the appliance is not in a demo or showroom mode, which disables cooling while leaving the display fully lit.

Start With These Quick Checks
- Is the freezer still cold? Cold freezer plus warm fridge means airflow. Both warm means something more fundamental. This is the fastest way to halve the problem.
- Check for demo or showroom mode. Refrigerators sold from a showroom floor have a mode that lights the display and runs the interior lights while disabling cooling. If a unit was recently delivered or reset and has never cooled, check this before anything else. The method for turning it off varies by model, so use the manual for your model number or contact LG support.
- Check the temperature settings. Around 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer is a normal starting point.
- Look for blocked vents. The vents that carry cold air from the freezer into the fridge must be clear. Boxes and packed shelves pressed against the rear wall stop the airflow.
- Listen for the evaporator fan inside the freezer. Hold the door switch in and listen. Silence where you used to hear a fan is a strong clue.
- Check the door seals with the dollar bill test at several points around each door.
- Vacuum the condenser coils. Unplug the unit first. Dust and pet hair on the coils cause both compartments to run warm.
Most Likely Causes
| Cause | What You May Notice | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Demo or showroom mode | Display and lights work, nothing has ever cooled | Easy |
| Blocked air vents | Freezer cold, fridge warm, food against the rear wall | Easy |
| Dirty condenser coils | Both sections warm, unit running constantly | Easy |
| Poor door seal | Condensation, frost near the door, extra running time | Easy |
| Evaporator fan stopped | Freezer cold, fridge warm, no fan sound | Moderate |
| Frosted evaporator coil or defrost fault | Cools, declines over days, repeats on a cycle | Technician recommended |
| Compressor or sealed system fault | No cooling in either section | Technician recommended |
1. Freezer Cold, Fridge Warm
This is the most common version of the complaint and it has a specific meaning. In this design the freezer is cooled directly and a fan pushes some of that cold air through a duct into the fresh food compartment. A rock-solid freezer with a fridge in the 50s tells you the cooling system is working and the cold air is not arriving.
How to check: clear the shelves nearest the rear wall and find the vents. Make sure nothing is against them. Then hold the freezer door switch in and listen for the evaporator fan.
What to do next: if clearing the vents fixes it within a few hours, that was the whole problem. If the fan is silent, or you can see heavy frost behind the freezer’s rear panel, the next steps need a technician.
2. Both Sections Warm
When neither compartment is cold, the heat is not getting out or is not being moved at all.
How to check: unplug the unit and inspect the condenser coils behind the lower rear grille. A mat of dust and pet hair is common and easy to fix. Then check the door seals, and listen for the compressor running.
What it means: clean coils and a compressor that runs constantly without producing cold points at the sealed system, which is not a homeowner repair under any circumstances.
3. Demo Mode
This deserves its own mention because it produces a convincing imitation of a dead refrigerator: full display, working lights, no cooling at all.
What you may notice: a newly delivered or recently reset unit that has never cooled since it arrived.
What to do next: the deactivation method differs between models, so check the manual for your specific model number, or ask LG support. It is not worth guessing at button combinations.
4. Defrost Problems
Behind the freezer’s rear panel is the evaporator coil, which frosts up in normal use and is cleared periodically by a defrost system. When that fails, frost builds until air can no longer pass through, and cooling declines progressively.
What you may notice: a very characteristic pattern, where the refrigerator recovers after being switched off for a day and then degrades again over the following week or two.
How to check: heavy frost or a solid ice sheet behind the freezer’s rear panel. Do not chip at it; the tubing is easily punctured.
What to do next: several components are involved and guessing between them is expensive. This is a diagnosis job.
5. Using LG’s Own Diagnostics
LG builds a diagnostic feature into many of its appliances that transmits status information to LG support, either as an audio tone held up to a phone or through the companion app, depending on the model.
Why it is worth using: it lets LG’s own support read the appliance’s state rather than working from a description, which is more reliable than guessing from symptoms. Details vary by model, so start from LG’s support site or your model’s manual.
What Your Symptoms Mean
- Freezer cold, fridge warm.Airflow: vents, evaporator fan, or a frosted coil.
- Both warm, unit running constantly.Condenser coils, door seals, or the sealed system.
- Both warm, no sound at all.Power, control, or compressor.
- Never cooled since delivery, display fully lit.Check demo mode first.
- Cools well, declines over days, recovers after being unplugged, repeats.Defrost system.
- Frost building on the rear wall of the fridge section.Door seal or defrost.
- Warm and leaking water at the same time.See a refrigerator leaking water.
When to Call a Technician
Do yourself: checking the freezer, settings, demo mode, vent clearance, door seals, and cleaning the condenser coils.
Call a technician when the freezer is cold and the fridge stays warm after the vents are clear, when there is heavy frost behind the freezer panel, when the cooling declines on a repeating cycle, or when nothing cools at all. Sealed system work involving refrigerant requires a certified technician. If the appliance is still in warranty, go through LG support first, and check what warranty applies to the compressor specifically, since it is often covered for longer than the rest of the appliance.
Deal with the food before the appliance. Perishables held above 40°F for more than two hours are not worth the risk.
